DESPITE being deaf, young athlete Mohammad Farid Mat Ali has taken up the challenge of running the inaugural 10km Run For the Deaf (RFD) in September.
Using sign language, the 21-year-old, who started running four years ago, said he hoped to reach the finishing point within two hours.
“I like running and being hearing impaired is a challenge as it affects my balance a little,” he said.
“It was tough at the beginning as there was no coach to teach me and I felt tired, but I eventually I got used to it,” added Farid.
The Run For the Deaf 2014 will be held on Sept 28 in conjunction with the International Deaf Day and it aims to spread awareness and understanding among the public about the hardships in life for the deaf community the world over.
The event, which is the brainchild of organising chairman Patrick Bernard, is to be held in collaboration with the Malaysian Deaf Sports Association (MSDeaf)
Bernard said the event was expected to attract more than 3,000 participants in the 10km event and 5km fun run.
“RFD has four categories, namely the men’s open, women’s open, men’s veteran and women’s veteran. Anyone, 13 years old and above is eligible to join, while participants who are 40 years old and above will be included in the veteran’s category,” he said.
Nu Sentral in Brickfields will be the starting and finishing point and proceeds from the event will be contributed to MSDeaf.
MSDeaf president Kamarzaman Harun, who was present at the recent launch of the run, said such events reach out to the public and make an impact for the deaf community.
“The event will definitely help the association financially as we are preparing the deaf sportsmen and sportswomen for the 8th Asia Pacific Deaf Games in Taoyuan, Taiwan, in October next year,” he said.
