CIVIL servants in the state should avoid gossiping at the workplace, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said.
“Gossiping is more prevalent these days with numerous social media websites and blogs available.
“But I must warn you that gossip can lead to slander.
“Worse still, it can destroy the working relationship between colleagues and ultimately mess up entire departments,” Dr Zambry said in his speech during the 2013 Perak Civil Servants Excellence Service Awards ceremony at the state secretariat building in Ipoh on Monday.
Civil servants, he said, must also refrain from complaining when asked to perform their duties.
“We must be ready to take on tasks without being told or ordered to. We should never give the excuse that we didn’t do something because we were not told to do it.
“If we have such an attitude, we will never give our best,” he said.
Dr Zambry said it was also important not to show disrespect, regardless of whom they were dealing with.
“As much as we must respect our bosses, we must also respect people of lower ranks, even if the person is a driver,” he said, adding that civil servants should be humble to ask instead of pretending to know everything.
Noting that success does not just happen, Dr Zambry said it could only be realised when workers of an organisation adhered to positive practises and attitudes.
A total of 101 civil servants from throughout the state received recognition for their efforts during the ceremony.
The Manjung Municipal Council, Ipoh City Council, Taiping Municipal Council and Kerian district council were also recognised for achieving the full four stars in the Star Rating System for Local Authorities 2013.
