Hawker first in line to apply for cut in water surcharge

A HAWKER has become the first person to apply for a discount on the Water Conservation Surcharge from the Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP).

He is eligible as he has 13 family members living with him under the same roof.

With the help of Air Itam assemblyman, Wong Hon Wai, hawker Khaw Chee Keong, 45, submitted the form which will entitle him to a 60% cut on water surcharge.

Khaw said the discount would help ease his financial burden as he had paid RM285.70 for his last water bill.

“I hope my application will be approved,” said the hawker who lives in a terrace house in Air Itam.

Wong said Khaw went to see him some two weeks ago and asked for help with the forms.

“He meets all the necessary requirements for the 60% discount,” Wong told a press conference at the water corporation’s customer service centre in Rifle Range yesterday.

Large families comprising eight or more individuals living under one roof are eligible to apply for this discount.

Forms are now available for the public at all the nine PBAPP customer service centres.

Wong said documents needed to support the application for discount were the applicant’s latest water bill, electricity bill and a copy of MyKad of all the individuals living in the house.

“The copies of the MyKad must contain the same address as the water bill.

“It must also be certified before the forms can be submitted,” he added.

He also advised the public to be aware of their water usage and to read their water bill carefully.

“I wish to advise the public to start conserving water.

“I know some people see the water issue as a small matter but we want to avoid a potential water crisis,” he said.
