JOHOR BARU: Former and current students of Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar or better known as English College (EC) can look forward to
its centenary celebration this month.
Former student R.Vidyanathan who is also state Unity and Human Resources executive councillor said the highlight of the celebration would take place on March 21.
On that day, Mentri Datuk Mohamed Khaled Nordin, another old pupil of the college would be launching a book on EC 100th anniversary.
“Our former student Royal Professor Ungku Aziz Ungku Abd Hamid will unveil the time capsule,” he said after attending the Indian Cultural Festival held at the college recently.
Vidyanathan said Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar would launch the centenary celebration and unveil the college’s landmark.
He hoped that ex-students from all over the country could take their time off to attend the event on Friday to share the joyous moments of their alma mater.
Vidyanathan who studied at English College from 1986 and 1990 and graduated with Masters in Law before becoming a politician said he had good times studying at the college.
He said so many changes had taken place in the college including the new multipurpose hall built on a field where students used play volleyball.
He is happy to note that even Chinese and Malay students from the college took park in the festival such as kolam making and painting earthen pots used to boil milk for Ponggal festival.
“School is the best avenue to foster a relationship between students of different ethnicity backgrounds and religious beliefs,” he said.
Vidyanathan said the celebration would be a good platform for the current students to get to know the former students who are now successful figures in the academic, politics and corporate worlds.
