English College celebrates centennial


JOHOR BARU: Celebrating a century old, Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar or better known as English College is expected to welcome back over one thousand of its former students for a night of celebration.

Started out with only 36 selected students, the cluster school has come a long way creating many leaders among the society and currently accommodates some 1,200 students.

The school, which is located along Jalan Sungai Chat here, had been receiving positive response from former students for the 100-years grand celebration on March 21.

The event’s co-chairperson Zais Mohd Akil said that some 1,199 former students including a 96-year-old ex-student Abdul Hamid Ariffin of the school has responded to the invite.

”Any former student who wishes to participate in the celebration can contact the school or get in touch with us through out Facebook page,” he said.

Zais added that the school would conduct a 100-hours countdown to the day of the grand ceremony, which will be held within the school compound.

“We will be launching two books and will reveal the time capsule on the day of the grand ceremony,” he said adding that an array of performances will be organised during the night celebrations.

Zais also said that the school would be special awards and goodies to the school’s former students, former staff members, student leaders, and teachers.
