Brunei horseshoe-shaped treat sells like hot cakes in Malaysia

The Horseshoe Cake from Brunei has become a sensation in Malaysia since it went viral in late 2023.

The soft round cake looks like a horseshoe when sliced and is filled with various flavours.

Dessert maker Nurul Rohaida Salleh, 39, told Bernama that her hands were full meeting customer orders.

Up to 1,500 horseshoe cakes of various fillings such as Nutella and matcha were sold daily at her shop in Meru Raya, Ipoh.

“Before this, not many types of flavours were used for the filling but now the cake is in high demand because there are various types of fillings,” she said when met at her shop.

Nurul Rohaida said the horseshoe cakes at her shop were supplied by eight vendors from Penang, Johor, Melaka and Selangor among other states.

The cakes were of various sizes and priced at RM6 each or RM10 for two small ones, RM15 (medium size) and RM25 to RM35 (large size).

Based on current demand, the sale of the cakes could reach more than RM30,000 a month, she said.

One of her horseshoe cake suppliers, Rosnani Muhamad, 47, who owns Anizz Cookies in Penang, said her factory produced up to 2,000 small-sized horseshoe cakes daily.

Half of these cakes are sent to Nurul Rohaida’s shop.

“The remaining 1,000 cakes are sent to agents in other places including Sungai Petani and Alor Setar in Kedah.

“We’ve been producing this horseshoe cake on the side for a long time, but it is in high demand now after going viral.

“Before, we only made hundreds of horseshoe cakes daily.

“Now, we have to increase it to thousands,” said Rosnani who is assisted by 13 workers.

The horseshoe cakes come with five types of fillings and were made using a special ovalette to ensure the cakes were soft and spongy.

“For the filling, we use Nestum to produce a crunchy taste with dark chocolate cream, matcha and quality white chocolate,” she said.
