For the coming school holidays, look no further than the neighbouring city-state to maximise your precious holiday time.
EVERYONE needs breaks. Spending time away is an excellent way for families to bond together.
Come mid-March it’s time for the school break. Where does one go though? We think the perfect solution would be to head to the closest one-stop-destination – Singapore!
There’s loads going on to keep any family happy – and we mean the whole family – adults, kids and teenagers. There’s something for everyone
Let’s take a look at some of those options. We have narrowed it down because we know how hard it is to choose from amongst the numerous attractions this island state has to offer.
1) Disney’s Beauty And The Beast Musical
Who does not know of this much-loved musical that comes to you from the same producers who did The Lion King on Broadway? A touching romantic story, acclaimed Academy-award winning score and songs, beautiful costumes and a talented cast. There’s quite nothing like watching a live stage performance.
This musical has played to over 35 million people in 13 countries. It will be on from March 21 to April 12 at the Grand Theatre, Marina Bay Sands.
We don’t know about you but we just adore pets and animals. If you want to see some adorable animals and also be a part of educational and entertaining workshops, competitions and activities that include a showcase of unique breeds then head on down to the Singapore Expo Hall 8. Do you know what an Alaskan Klee Kai, Chinese Crested Dog, Singapura Cat and Toco Toucan look like?
You will get to see animal stars such as Bobo, Singapore’s first skateboarding dog that charmed the crowd, with his skills last year. Meet the famous Jackson Galaxy, the famed cat behaviourist who hosts Animal Planet’s My Cat from Hell.
It’s on from March 20–22.
Animals, nature and zoos – perennial favourite for most families and Singapore Zoo is a world-acclaimed award-winning one. Here animals live in settings close to their real habitats. You get to walk along foot tracks or take a tram and see these animals up close and personal and maybe even interact with some.
The animals come from all over the world and from very different habitats. You can say hello to friendly orang utans from Borneo, polar bears from the Arctic or animals out of Africa, and hoppity kangaroos from Down Under or closer to home, the elephants of Asia for example.
You can literally spend the whole day here!
4) River Safari
Right next door to the zoo is Asia’s first and only river-themed wildlife park. What you get to experience is a river course that takes you through some of the most remarkable rivers all over the globe – from the mighty Mississippi to the impressive Yangtze.
Cruising through the river on a boat you get to see over 5,000 aquatic and land animals from all those famous river habitats. It is also home to the world’s largest amphibian, the Chinese giant salamander and the park’s other famous residents – giant pandas Kai Kai and Jia Jia.
5) S.E.A Aquarium at Resorts World Sentosa
Want to meet Dora and her many friends? Actually more than 100,000 of her friends are here. The way the exhibits are set up they surround you and even tease you. Kids can crawl into a “cave” and pop their heads into a dome for thrilling, up-close views of the moray eel.
They are grouped according to 10 different zones with 49 habitats. Check out the fish from the Bay of Bengal, the Straits of Malacca and Andaman Sea or the Great Lakes of East Africa.
Not only can you eat at the restaurant, Ocean Restaurant by chef Cat Cora of Iron Chef fame, while fishes swim above you. You can opt for the highly recommended Ocean Dreams sleepover for the incredible opportunity to tour behind-the-scenes and wake-up surrounded by shimmering schools of fish.
6) Hai Bin
Go fish – remember that card game? Well here at Hai Bin’s two facilities you get to trawl for prawns. Singapore’s biggest prawning facilities is the place for you catch your own dinner which will later be barbecued for the best ever fresh seafood dinner you ever had; more so because you caught it yourself.
For horse lovers and horse riding enthusiasts this is the place to be at. Horse riding can be expensive but here at Gallop you and your family can avail yourself at affordable joy rides and lessons for ages. Or opt for a session where you can interact and feed ponies and donkeys. There are even treasure hunts on horseback and campfires to gather round over.
There are 10 riding arenas and 200 stables filled with a total of 150 horses and ponies along with a pool of 10 experienced instructors so you’re spoilt for choice.
Do you know that a study done by NASA found that a 10-minute jump on a trampoline is equivalent to a 30-minute run? Plus you’re having great fun while defying gravity (and bonus points if you can sing that song from the musical Wicked while at it). It’s safe for all ages and you get to also dive into a foam pit and practice a little bit of parkour. There’s 5,000 sq ft (464.5 sqm) of trampolines to jump from!
Do your kids drive you up the wall sometimes? Is it because they are climbing walls too? Well both you and your kids can do that here under the guidance of certified instructors. All sort of climbing environments and courses for beginners to more experienced climbers. There’s even one specially designed for children between four to seven years of age.
Now these gardens are just spectacular, stunning and awe-inspiring. They have won numerous prestigious international awards. Marvel at stunning waterfront vistas and massive 16-storey-tall Supertrees, the breath-taking Tulipmania exhibition at the Flower Dome, a Cloud Forest enveloped in mists (think of the movie King Kong) or the world’s tallest indoor waterfall over a 101ha area.
