My first impression of the Alila Manggis is of a simple thatched-roofed, double-storey rectangular building surrounding a swimming pool set in a coconut grove.
Australian architect Kerry Hill designed it after a traditional Balinese village and kept it minimally stylish using stone, timber and fabrics, interspersed with reflecting pools of water filled with lilies and reeds.
