Sailing Borneo

IN the waters of the South China Sea, a flotilla of boats raced forward, powered by the winds. These rigs were sailing in the Borneo Cup Yachting Challenge 2005 (www.borneorace.com), which was a series of races from Labuan to Miri, Sarawak, comprising the Labuan Harbour Regatta, Labuan-Miri Passage Race and Miri Bay Regatta.

This year’s challenge, the second after the inaugural one in 2003, saw participants from Malaysia, New Zealand, Brunei, Australia and St Vincent (St Vincent and the Grenadines is a multi-island nation in the Caribbean) racing in a variety of yachts in April. They began the week-long experience in the federal state of Labuan, where eight yachts gathered for a harbour race for two sunny days.
