WhatsApp has introduced a new feature called Message Summaries, which summarises unread messages to help users catch up on their chats.
When available, users will be able to prompt Meta AI to generate a summary of all unread messages in a chat by tapping on the unread messages banner, after which the feature provides a general overview of the points discussed.
The company says that this is meant to give users a "an idea of what is happening, before reading the details" in unread messages.
The WhatsApp blogpost on the feature further says that the response will be generated "without Meta or WhatsApp ever seeing your messages or the private summaries".
Summaries generated by the feature will also only be visible by the user who prompted Meta AI to generate it.
Message Summaries are turned off by default according to the company, with users having the option to enable it in individual or group chats by toggling the "Advanced Chat Privacy" option in the specific chat's settings menu.
The messaging app provider says that the initial rollout will be limited to English-language messages for users in the United States.
It is currently uncertain when the feature will reach Malaysia, but the company says that it hopes "to bring it to other languages and countries later this year".
