A local cosplayer has filed a police report over explicit photos of her, allegedly created by editing her existing images using artificial intelligence (AI), being circulated and sold online.

In a post to her X (formerly Twitter) page, Malaysian cosplayer @Elyanasparks claims that the alleged perpetrator is also reportedly selling similarly edited photos of other individuals, including minors.

The post, first made to the social media platform yesterday (Jan 21), has received over 450,000 views at the time of writing.

When contacted, Petaling Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Shahrulnizam Ja'afar confirmed receiving the report.

“We have since handed over the case to the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for further investigation,” he said. It is learnt that the police will also issue a statement on the matter.

A screenshot shared with her post also revealed that the same perpetrator was allegedly accepting requests for explicit edits at a fee of RM2 per image. The screenshot included an ewallet QR code used for payments.

In a follow-up reply to her initial post, @Elyanasparks further spoke out against normalising such violations.

“Anyways I know some people will point at me because I cosplay, YES I KNOW the CONSEQUENCES. But you don’t have to blame when it’s literally a CRIME to edit someone’s photo inappropriately.

“The point is; this kind of editing AI inappropriately is wrong and a lot of people has been a victim, even minors and those who covered themselves too, so it has to stop. Nobody deserves it. Especially their photo being SOLD,” she wrote.
