Review: Racing game 'Make Way' is 'Mario Kart', but so much more chaotic

BERLIN: Whether Matchbox miniatures, Hot Wheels cars or Carrera track racers, hardly any children's toy is as timeless as small, racing car models.

The racing game Make Way brings the old days back to life on PCs and consoles as players get behind the wheel of small toy cars and race them over cobbled-together tracks.

The game doesn’t come with prefabricated tracks, such as those seen in Mario Kart. Instead you have to build them yourself from a wide selection of track sections, obstacles, and curves. Before each race you’re given a matter of seconds to string them together.

That doesn’t give you much time to think so every round has a few surprises in store. Since no two tracks are the same, a race can be quite a challenge.

Track parts such as loops, ramps and chicanes are not easy to overcome and there are also obstacles in the way that crush cars or blow them off the track.

The focus is on multiplayer mode for up to four players locally or online. Friends quickly become rivals as you ram and fire cannons at each other in the race until someone flies off the track.

With a mix of ultra-fast track design and chaotic racing, Make Way is as simple as it is ingenious. The unpredictable chases are likely to be the most fun when playing with friends and family – even if you don't make it to the finish line.

Make Way is available to download for Nintendo Switch, PCs (via Steam), PlayStation and Xboxes at a price of around €15/US$15 (RM36 in Malaysia). – dpa
