BRUSSELS: A would-be Instagram influencer who filmed himself driving muscle cars at speeds of up to 250 kilometres per hour (155 mph) to entertain his 40,000 followers, has been arrested in Belgium, prosecutors said on Dec 22.
Police had been hunting the “speed freak” for more than six months since first spotting videos online in which the suspect pushed hire cars far over the speed limit on public roads and highways.
He is said to have hired more than 70 high-performance cars, registered abroad in Germany and Poland, and brought them to Belgium over the past two years, according to the prosecutor’s office.
He was finally arrested on Dec 7, apparently driving under the influence of cannabis and despite a suspended licence. From Thursday, he has been out on bail wearing an electronic bracelet.
Prosecutors warned that he could face a hefty prison term and that police would continue to monitor suspect social media accounts for serious motoring offences. – AFP
