A sex offender went to a location in Bucks County to have sex with a 14-year-old boy on Wednesday but, instead, police were waiting to arrest him.

Bensalem police said 76-year-old David Coles Sr., who was convicted of multiple sex crimes in 1997, is now charged with new offenses related to the attempted sexual abuse of teens.

In November, investigators found that Coles had posted an ad on a dating website, saying he was looking for a male to engage in sexual acts with, according to police.

He then began speaking to someone he believed was a 14-year-old boy through emails and text messages, police said, in which he said he wanted to meet the person for sex. However, the chatter tapered off.

In February, Coles initiated a conversation with someone he believed was middle-school-aged through a dating app. Coles agreed to meet the person and take him to his apartment in Bristol, saying that he wanted to engage in sexual acts.

The meet was scheduled for Wednesday, police said, and when Coles arrived, members of Bensalem’s Criminal Investigations Unit and Special Investigation Unit were standing by. Coles was arrested on charges of unlawful contact with a minor, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault, corruption of minors, indecent assault and criminal use of a communication facility.

Coles, whose previous conviction requires him to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, was placed in Bucks County Correctional Facility on US$10mil (RM44.78mil) bail.
