Participants from various industries looking to adopt data visualisation got a taste of the technology at a workshop organised by The Star Media Group’s business analytics manager Sandip Mitra.

Universiti Tun Abdul Razak chief student experience officer Asst Prof Dr Zuhaili Akmal Ismail said he was drawn to the Data Visualisation Workshop because there is a lack of training for the technology.

In the full day course held at Menara Star in Petaling Jaya, Mitra guided participants to use data visualisation software Tableau and Tableau Prep to build dashboards with interactive maps, charts and tables. He also taught them to organise the information into groups and hierarchies, as well as filter and sort data effectively.

Zuhaili said he liked the fact that the instructor was an industry professional, not just a full-time trainer or employee with the software company.

Golden Screen Cinemas chief operating officer Irving Chee said he went for the workshop to understand why data visualisation was popular, and to find out if it could be deployed in the organisation.

He also wanted to find out the features of Tableau and the cost of adopting the software.

Malaysian Rubber Export Promotion Council corporate planning and research executive Syafia Syahirah Mazlan said the training was timely as her organisation was going to adopt Tableau.

Before the course, she only knew how to filter data, but now she has learned to use it to tell a story and is planning to use it to better communicate the company’s research to customers.

Nawawi Tie Leung Property Consultants Sdn Bhd researcher Asha Mahalingam said her company had sent her to explore new ways to work with data, and she was also interested in the workshop for personal development.

She said the training made it easy to learn the software because she was offered concrete examples.

In addition to software training, the attendees also got a chance to see data visualisation being put into practical use by The Star Media Group’s news editor Razak Ahmad who shared his industry experience.

The aim of the workshop was to show participants the value of data visualisation which can give clearer insights into a company’s day-to-day operations, including understanding the target market.
