Remasters of modern classic Xenoblade Chronicles, two seafaring Assassin’s Creed games, acclaimed fantasy adventure Divinity: Original Sin 2, plus the first Deadly Premonition are being released on the Nintendo Switch, as well as a timed exclusive on Deadly Premonition 2.

Upgraded versions of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag and Assassin’s Creed: Rogue were expected among the many game announcements featuring during a Sept 4 Nintendo Direct video montage, but fan favourite Japanese role-playing game Xenoblade Chronicles, the lauded Divinity: Original Sin 2, and not only weird adventure Deadly Premonition but its unanticipated sequel were among welcome surprises.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remains one of the series highlights, having introduced naval combat and navigation to the familiar formula of exploration, discovery, combat, and conspiratorial intrigue for the historically-set Assassin’s Creed franchise.

Having been released in 2013 on last-generation consoles as well as PlayStation 4, PC and Xbox One, its version of sun-kissed Caribbean seas and early 18th century piratical swashbuckling will be arriving on Nintendo Switch from Dec 6.

When it does, it will be in the company of another well-appreciated franchise entry.

Joining Black Flag in Assassin’s Creed: The Rebel Collection will be Assassin’s Creed: Rogue, taking place towards the later end of the 1700s and further north in the cold Atlantic and American colonies.

The excellent Divinity: Original Sin 2 is likewise landing on Switch, available for immediate download.

Its making its way over from PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Mac and PC, here with four-player same-team multiplayer, plus compatibility with Steams Mac and PC version.

Xenoblade Chronicles, a treasured epic-scale role-playing adventure first released in 2010, is receiving the remaster treatment.

Originally intended for a Japanese audience, it released to significant international interest -- imports, petitions, and software piracy -- with Nintendo’s European and American divisions bringing it westwards in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

Since then, it’s been re-released on the New Nintendo 3DS and prompted the development of Xenoblade Chronicles X for the Nintendo Wii U console.

While Xenoblade Chronicles 2 launched on Switch in 2017, the original Xenoblade Chronicles is to finally make its Switch debut in 2020.

Deadly Premonition was another surprise hit of 2010, straining against technical limitations and heavily inspired by Twin Peaks to propel players into a detective mystery both unsettling and amusing.

First released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 then, in 2013, in the form of a Director's Cut for PS3 and PC, Deadly Premonition landed on Switch as Deadly Premonition Origins in concert with the Nintendo Direct and was made immediately available.

In addition, Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise is in development for 2020 and has been announced as a Switch exclusive, anticipated for release on other platforms at some point afterwards.
