Chinese film star Fan Bingbing awarded US$22,500 over online slurs

Beijing Chaoyang District People’s Court on Monday ruled in Fan’s favour, and as well as the financial award ordered Chen, who uses the screen name Qinling Eryue, to publish an apology to the actress and leave it on the front page of his Weibo account for seven days. — SCMP

Chinese actress Fan Bingbing has been awarded 161,500 yuan (RM94,941) in compensation after winning a legal case against a man who accused her on social media of sexual impropriety.

The 37-year-old, who was last year ordered to pay almost 884mil yuan (RM519.67mil) in outstanding taxes and fines following an investigation into tax evasion, filed the suit against Chen Yongpeng after he repeatedly accused her on Weibo – China’s Twitter-like platform – of engaging in “improper sexual relationships”, according to a statement by Beijing Xingquan Law Firm, which represented her.
