Two action games with a heavy emphasis on randomly generated levels: the playful single-player Rad and harsh multiplayer Remnant: From The Ashes"; Japanese action game Oninaki and remastered open world crime adventure Yakuza 3; NSA thriller Telling Lies and contemplative Stones Of Solace.
Remnant: From The Ashes
PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows PC from Aug 20
Wade through randomly assembled levels defeating manifestations of an otherwordly evil, preferable as one of up to three well-armed survivors, with on-point combat, striking design, the novelty of randomly generated levels, and the thrill of hard-fought cooperative accomplishments in its favour. Initial reviews identify sharp increases in difficulty, especially played solo, and a paucity of effective new equipment as areas to improve upon.
Pick your plucky teenager and venture out into the Fallow's colourful, post-post-apocalyptic badlands, taking on wild mutations to aid you in pulling humanity's destiny towards a more favourable course. Release date reviews lament the frustration of an unfavourably randomised run, but they praise its visual and soundtrack aesthetic, depth, and the satisfying nature of progression when it does occur.
PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Windows PC from Aug 22
Something's gone astray between this life and the next in Oninaki, where a guardian Watcher, assigned to accompany wayward souls, meets a mysterious girl and sets off on a mission of his own. Despite being from the same studio as acclaimed 90s-style role-playing adventures I Am Setsuna and Lost Sphear, it's much more of an action game than either of its siblings.
iOS and Windows PC from Aug 23
The next crime thriller from the creator of inventive police evidence puzzler Her Story. This one's all about investigating a trove of covertly recorded video conversations lifted from an NSA database, piecing together what actually happened, and starring Logan Marhsall-Green (from Spider-Man: Homecoming), Alexandra Shipp (X-Men: Apocalypse), Kerry Bishé (Halt And Catch Fire), and Angela Sarafyan (Westworld).
PlayStation 4 and PC from Aug 20
Following the release of the acclaimed open-world Japanese crime franchise's first two games as Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2, plus prequel Yakuza 0 and latest titles Yakuza 6 and detective spin-off Judgement, this is also available as part of a digital Yakuza Remastered Collection trilogy, expanding to include the forthcoming Yakuza 4 (Oct 29) and Yakuza 5 (Feb 11, 2020). A limited run of physical Remastered Collection editions is planned for release in February.
Stones Of Solace
Free for PC and Mac from Aug 20
A short, contempative, and reflective game that produces a different animal(esque) shrine every day, and lets players gather their thoughts before creating an arrangement of several items – flowers, grasses, shells – as a small gift. – AFP Relaxnews
