In conjunction with the release of the Pokémon Detective Pikachu movie, Pokémon Go is releasing themed quests and outfits.

Game maker Niantic announces that the Pokémon featured in the movie will appear more frequently in the wild as well as in raid battles.

"Get your detective hats ready and start looking for clues as we celebrate the one and only Pokémon Detective Pikachu movie! Do you have what it takes to keep up with the famous caffeine-powered detective who’s about to electrify audiences all over the world?" it says.

One of the Pokémon, Aipom, will also gain a shiny version aka an alternate colour scheme.

During the event, which runs until 5am (local time) on May 18, players will also receive double XP for catching Pokémon and stand a chance of encountering a Pikachu wearing a detective hat when taking Augmented Reality photos, in the same way that players encountered the Smeargle Pokémon earlier.

Niantic says specially themed Field Research will be available during this event, while new themed avatar outfits will be available in the Style Shop.

Field Research are puzzles that require players to accomplish certain tasks, and can be obtained by interacting with a virtual checkpoint, called a Pokéstop.

Meanwhile, mobile market research firm Sensor Tower says Pokémon Go has seen continued growth in its popularity, with in-game spending going up 33% to US$270mil (RM1.12bil) in the first quarter of 2019, compared to the same period last year.

The firm notes that spending was up thanks to hype of the coming movie, plus Niantic’s recent Easter themed Eggstravaganza event.
