Microsoft is making the first move towards digital-only gaming, with the Xbox One S ditching the optical drive for a new system that only allows players to buy content digitally.

Microsoft hopes the Xbox One S, going on sale on May 7 for US$249 (RM1,031), will attract buyers with its low price, as it's being sold for US$50 (RM207) less than the official price of the current console with an optical drive.

But really, you lose quite a lot more on the Xbox One S, as the lack of drive also means you have no Blu-ray Player and can't play games that aren't available for download at all.

The fact is that the newest Xbox with a drive can also be bought for US$200 (RM828) online, which makes the Xbox One S seem like a waste of money.

Nevertheless, this is probably where the gaming trend will head fairly soon.

There are no other big technical changes to the new model. You get 1 TB in disk memory as well as a wireless controller. Microsoft will also include three games in the price: Minecraft, Forza Horizon 3 and Sea Of Thieves. – dpa
