Visitors to China won't have to struggle to read signboards or ask locals next time they have a toilet emergency, thanks to a new toilet locating map service within the Baidu Maps app.

China Daily reports the feature – developed by search engine Baidu at the behest of China's Culture and Tourism Ministry – lists some 20,000 toilets built before 2019.

This includes toilets in tourist attractions, transport centres, restaurants, entertainment venues, leisure areas and parks; which will be locateable through Baidu's map app.

The app can also help travellers find barrier-free toilets for people with special needs or disabilities.

To ensure the toilet listings are not bogus, the Ministry roped in relevant departments and personnel to collect and verify toilet information.

It was not made clear if the toilets would have doors.
