You might love YouTube, but there is one good reason to hate the web's most popular video platform: it's run by Google, a company known for its efforts to hoard people's personal data.

If you don't want Google knowing everything about your video habits, there is an alternative you should know about: invidio.us. It's a website that shows you YouTube content, but doesn't pass nearly as much information about its users on to Google.

Another reason to hate YouTube are all the ads, and if you use this alternative to watch YouTube, then you won't be forced to watch any. You also won't need a Google account to subscribe to channels and you won't need to run Javascript in your browser – if that matters to you.

According to IT expert Mike Kuketz: The only information Google receives is the IP address when you watch a video. And the best bit: it's free. – dpa
