The diehard Tumblr users who reportedly threatened to ditch the platform if it went ahead with the ban on pornography must have made good on their threats.

Web analytics firm SimilarWeb claims that visits to Tumblr websites dropped from 521 million in December to 437 million in January.

Last December, the popular microsite decided to prohibit pornographic content from its service, with the company’s chief executive Jeff D’Onofrio stating that the decision was made after “serious thought” regarding standards in the blogging community.

Apple had earlier pulled Tumblr from the App Store in November, due to the platform’s failure to filter pornographic content that involved child exploitation.

Beyond illegal content, the ban covers “photos, videos, or Gifs that show real-life human genitals or female-presenting nipples, and any content – including photos, videos, Gifs and illustrations – that depict sex acts”.

However, exceptions are made for “exposed female-presenting nipples in connection with breastfeeding, birth or after-birth moments, and health-related situations, such as post-mastectomy or gender confirmation surgery”.

Written content such as “erotica, nudity related to political or newsworthy speech, and nudity found in art, such as sculptures and illustrations”, can still be posted on the platform.

Nevertheless, the decision to ban adult content on Tumblr didn’t sit well with many of its users, prompting a “log off” movement that encouraged users to leave the platform. One user even started an online petition calling for the ban to be lifted, and has received over 600,000 signatures so far.

The petition states: “Let people post porn, it’s 90% of the reason anybody is on the site in the first place.

“If you really want a non-18+ Tumblr, start a new one with that specific goal in mind. Don’t rip down what people have spent years working on.”
