Motorola's new G7 series is not for performance fanatics or people who judge a phone on a high purchase price.

The G series, around since 2013, represents solid mid-range hardware at relatively low prices.

The seventh edition of the series offers four new phones costing between US$170 (RM693) and US$340 (RM1,387). The devices differ in details but have a lot in common.

All follow the current trend of having a lot of display and very little frame around the phones. Inside they have Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 processors (except for the G7 Plus) and run Android 9 (Pie).

They're all dual-SIM devices with two full-size SIM slots and space for a memory card. Also on board are face recognition, fingerprint sensors and Motorola's own gesture-based system.

The entry model is the Moto G7 Play, and it's a lot of smartphone for the price. Other than an occasional delay when switching between apps and not so great battery life, the phone, with its 5.7in display, performs well. Storage space isn't huge at 32 gigabytes (GB) but adding a memory card provides another 512GB.

The images that the 13-megapixel camera take are respectable for this price range, largely thanks to extensive post-processing.

The Moto G7 Power costs around US$250 (RM1,019) and puts the focus on battery life. The 5000 mAh battery is said to last about two-and-a-half days between charges.

The phone has a 6.2in display, 4GB of memory and 64GB of storage. Even though Motorola hopes to attract mobile gamers, it can't really compete with high-performance models.

The Moto G7 is the compromise model of the series. For US$280 (RM1,141), it's a well-balanced mix of economy price and performance.

The Full HD+ display is noticeably more finely grained and brilliantly coloured than the G7 Play or Power. Memory and performance are the same as for the G7 Power.

The dual camera also does more than the other two models, offering portrait mode, 4K video and object recognition via Google Lens. The front camera also takes up less space in the display.

The top-of-the-range Moto G7 Plus has the same 6.2in display as the G7, but goes one better on the camera and performance. With the Snapdragon 636, it has a more powerful processor than the other models. The dual camera has 16 and 5 megapixel sensors and optical image stabilisation to minimise camera shake.

Other than that, the subtleties of the Plus model are in the details. For example, a nano-coating to protect against light water contact and a second speaker for stereo output. It also features Bluetooth 5 and a battery that can last 12 hours on 15 minutes of charging.

In conclusion, Motorola's new G7 series can compete well with similarly priced competition from the likes of Honor and Nokia, and its four models should be appealing to users with different needs and budgets. – dpa
