Cryptocurrency thefts, scams hit almost RM7bil in 2018: report

Cryptocurrencies stolen from exchanges and scammed from investors surged more than 400% in 2018 to around $US1.7bil (RM6.9bil), according to a report from US-based cyber security firm CipherTrace released on Tuesday.

Of the US$1.7bil, the report, which looks at criminal activity in the digital currency market, said US$950mil (RM3.9bil) constituted thefts from cryptocurrency exchanges and infrastructure services such as wallets, up nearly 260% from US$266mil (RM1bil) in 2017.
