Yu introducing Huawei's latest flagship range, the Mate 20

LONDON: There were many rumours surrounding Huawei’s Mate 20 series and while some were put to rest at the global launch, others were proven correct. Rumours proven true included the in-display fingerprint sensor and wireless charging capability sported by the Mate 20 Pro.

Besides the Mate 20 Pro, the Chinese tech giant also introduced the Mate 20, Mate 20 X and Mate 20 RS, a collaboration with Porsche Design.

“Smartphones are an important entrance to the digital world. The Huawei Mate 20 series is designed to be the best Mate for consumers, accompanying and empowering them to enjoy a richer more fulfilled life with their higher intelligence, battery lives and powerful camera performance,” said Huawei consumer business group CEO Richard Yu at Excel London.

The Mate 20 has a 6.5in full HD display and fingerprint scanner on the back.

The Mate 20 Pro sports a 6.4in curved OLED 2K screen, and reportedly the world’s first wireless “reverse charging” feature which allows the smartphone to double as a power bank.

The Mate 20 has a 4,000mAh battery, while the Mate 20 Pro has 4,200mAh battery. The biggest is reserved for the Mate 20 X, which has a 5,000mAh battery that is claimed to last for up to two days.

The Mate 20 X has a whopping 7.2in screen with an 18.7:9 ratio, and has all the capabilities sported by the Mate 20 Pro, except for the IP68 certification (for water and dust resistance) and wireless charging capability.

The devices run on Huawei’s latest 7nm 980 Kirin chipset, which is claimed to recognise 4,500 images per minute, and run 20% faster than its predecessor. This improves the AI's capabilities for face recognition and object detection so if the subject is dancing or running in front of the camera, the smartphone will still be able to focus on the person in real time.

The Mate 20 Pro, Mate 20 X and Mate RS have 40-megapixel wide-angle camera, 20-megapixel ultra-wide camera and 8-megapixel camera with 3x zoom.

The Mate 20 sports a 16-megapixel ultra-wide camera, 12-megapixel wide-angle camera and 8-megapixel camera with 2x zoom.

The Mate 20 is priced from €799 (RM3,850), the Mate 20 Pro costs €1,049 (RM5,050), the Mate 20 X is priced at €899 (RM4,300), and the Mate RS starts at €1,695 (RM8,150).

The official prices and availability in Malaysia will be announced at a later date.
