How environmentally friendly is this yoghurt? Does this face wash contain microplastics? Is there gluten in this cake?
To find the answers to these questions and more, conscious consumers can download Codecheck, an app for Android and iOS that can give you detailed information about what you are buying.
Simply scan the barcode of any given product, and the app will show you how good or bad the product is based on a traffic light rating system.
Red means the product contains ingredients or substances that are known to be bad for you and/or the environment. Green means the product is generally recommended and that it contains nothing harmful, either for you or the environment.
The system can also be customised to fit your own individual needs, such as food allergies, specific dietary requirements or if you are vegetarian or vegan.
This means that if you have any concerns about a specific product while out shopping, you can quickly and reliably find out if it's safe for you.
Users can create a profile or opt to use the app anonymously. The basic version is free and contains ads, but for €4 (RM19) you can purchase an ad-free version. The app also offers a news feed focused on health and the environment. — dpa
