Over the weekend, Russian World Cup host city Kazan shuttled soccer fans from the designated "fan zone" to the stadium arena in driverless buses.

It was hardly a far or long ride – 650m (2,132ft) – but the unmanned service was part of a push in Russia to introduce fully automated civil transportation, reports Bloomberg.

The electric vehicle, provided by Russian firm Kamaz, stopped well short of the arena for safety reasons, leaving fans to make the rest of the way on foot.

The fans were on their way to watch the match between France and Australia in the eastern city of Kazan.

Kazan is set to host six World Cup matches.

Other destinations that have been experimenting with driverless buses include Stockholm, Sweden; Germany; California, United States; and Lyon, France. — AFP Relaxnews
