Journeying through the void, epic battles in the Middle Ages and combatting zombies – the latest PC games offer plenty to keep players occupied.

Crossing the wasteland

FAR: Lone Sails from developer Okomotive revolves around a peculiar vehicle, a kind of cross between a train and a ship that allows the player to travel across the desolate wasteland of this vast game world. To survive, it's vital to keep the ship in good repair and supplied with fuel.

The artfully drawn graphics have a morbid, apocalyptic feel, yet at the same time a captivating charm. But where does it all lead? In FAR: Lone Sails the journey is the real goal. The developers have deliberately designed the game's controls and inventory to be simple so that players can concentrate on the basics.

The PC version of the game is available now on the Steam platform for around US$35 (RM139). Versions for the Playstation 4 and Xbox One are also coming but no date has yet been announced.

Return of the undead

Even though the heyday of zombie games is slowly coming to an end, Microsoft Studios has brought out a sequel to the popular State Of Decay. As befits a good zombie title, players in " need to fight as many undead as possible while making sure that the uninfected stay healthy.

There's a well-stocked arsenal to choose from and found objects can be used to upgrade the home camp. A highlight of the game is the new co-op multiplayer mode which allows up to four friends to work together to fight against the undead.

The standard version of the game costs around US$35 (RM139) while the ultimate edition costs US$50 (RM199). State Of Decay 2 is available for PCs and the Xbox One and is suitable for players aged 18 and older.

Sabre-rattling and whip-swinging

City Of Brass is a first-person adventure in the style of Arabian Nights. The player has to make their way through the eponymous desert town with sabres and a whip.

Immeasurable riches await the player, but so too does a quick death in the form of spear traps, arrows, poison mists and skeleton attackers. The gameplay and backstory are reminiscent of Prince Of Persia.

The game is a rogue-lite title which means that levels are generated procedurally each time and death is final. As well, there are strict time limits to reach each goal. If you die or take too long, you'll find yourself back at the start.

And if all that wasn't enough, there's a demanding fight waiting at the end. City Of Brass is available for PCs, the Xbox One and the Playstation 4. The age rating is 12 years and older.

Mass battles against a historical backdrop

Historically not entirely accurate, but tactically sophisticated: That's how the real-time strategy title Ancestors Legacy by publisher Sega can be described.

The game is based on historical battles from the 8th to the 13th century and players can choose from Viking, Teutonic, Anglo-Saxon and Slavic warriors with around ten missions available for each.

Strategy is as important as battle tactics – players have to maintain their own bases and stay within their resources. Attributes such as experience, equipment and the morale of the troops count and the terrain and day and night conditions can all be cleverly used.

The game, which can be played in single player or multiplayer mode, is suitable for players aged 16 and older. The PC version of Ancestors Legacy is available from Steam for around US$45 (RM179). An Xbox One version is scheduled to appear in the first quarter of 2019. — dpa
