Maps with street lines, rivers and regional markings have a special charm of their own for many people. Map readers can easily get lost in the patterns – or simply marvel at the cherished routes of their homeland from above.

Anyone who’s always wanted to have the surface map of their hometown set as the background image for their smartphone should check out the following website, where maps are available for free in simple designs.

With the help of the Background Generator from the Finnish print services provider Alvar Carto, these maps can also be configured for free as the background for smartphone screens. Users can also select different sections of maps at well, colour them in and export them as graphics based on the screen resolution of different smartphones.

The screen resolutions for a number of popular smartphones are already on file at the moment. Otherwise users can orient themselves towards their screen resolution of their own smartphone if it's missing from the existing list. The service is free to use, as the map materials are derived from the OpenStreetMap project. — dpa
