Just when it seemed the hype around Fortnite Battle Royale couldn't get any bigger, developer Epic Games announced that the mass shooter game is coming to smartphones.

Initially the game is only available for iOS devices, but an Android version will be coming in the next few months. Until now, the game has only been available for PCs, Macs, the Playstation 4 and the Xbox One.

Email invites will be sent out with a link to download the game to players signing up at www.Fortnite.com. Invited players will also receive game codes they can share with friends.

One highlight of the smartphone game is Cross Play, which allows players to compete against each other regardless of what platform they're using. Graphically and in terms of content and action, the different versions of the game won't differ.

Players on iOS devices will need an Internet connection and at least an iPhone 6 or SE running iOS 11. The game can also be played on an iPad Mini 4, an iPad Pro, an iPad Air 2 or an iPad 2017 running iOS 11. — dpa
