Sixteen-bit nostalgia on modern consoles: Sega is launching Sega Mega Drive Classics, a game collection with more than 50 titles, to the Playstation 4 and Xbox One on May 29.

Expect classic games such as Sonic The Hedgehog, Golden Axe, Phantasy Star II, Altered Beast and Alex Kidd. There are even new features such as online multiplayer achievements, mirror mode and a rewind function.

For PCs, the collection has been around for some time. Owners of that version will also receive a major update on May 29 which will provide the same games and functions as the console version.

The Sega Mega Drive Classics collection can be seen as another part of the current retro wave. Console games of the 1980s and 1990s can already be played on new editions of Nintendo's NES and Super NES and a modernised reissue of the C64 console is in the works. Sega games like Sonic The Hedgehog have also been around for some time for smartphones. — dpa
