Netflix has recruited Golden Globe winner Gina Rodriguez of Jane The Virgin fame for its globetrotting adaptation of educational video game Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego?"
Gina Rodriguez will take on the role of Carmen Sandiego, a red-cloaked, hat-wearing woman of mystery made famous by a series of computer games that began in the late 1980s and unfurled to embrace two game shows and an animated cartoon among numerous other formats.
In contrast, this Netflix project will be a live-action film.
"But wait a minute," film and TV sleuths may say, "wasn't Gina Rodriguez already attached to Netflix's resurrection of Carmen Sandiego?"
For back in early 2017, Gina was named as the lead behind an animated series coming from Netflix, with Finn Wolfhard of Stranger Things and It joining as the voice of The Player.
This, however, is a different project: the animated series has not been cancelled, but Netflix has ordered not only a cartoon but also a full-length movie to boot, retaining Rodriguez for both productions.
There's no date or director included in the announcement carried by Deadline, though the Carmen Sandiego series and a book line are both on their way for 2019.
Rodriguez is also named as one of three producers on the film, which is being overseen by her company I Can and I Will.
Though best known for her turn on satirical romcom Jane The Virgin, the US actress voiced Mary in Christmas story The Star and hedgehog Una in Oscar-nominated animated feature Ferdinand.
She played oil rig navigator Officer Fleytas in disaster movie Deepwater Horizon and, most recently, co-starred as paramedic Anya in Annihilation, a Paramount Pictures film in North America and China, but distributed by Netflix in the rest of the world.
The original game, Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego?, was first released in 1985 for home computer systems of the time, with Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo editions emerging later.
It was re-released through Facebook in 2011, while an unofficial fan-made homage, Sandiego Inc., was made available for iOS devices in November 2017. — AFP Relaxnews
