Nintendo is giving owners of its portable Switch console the ability to make fishing rods, cars, houses and even a piano of it using just cardboard, string and a few other components.

The idea behind Nintendo's new Labo concept is primarily aimed at children. The kit contains cardboard pieces that can be assembled to make various items which use the Switch's functionality.

For example, the piano uses a controller's infrared camera to detect which key is being pressed. The appropriate sound is then played through the console's speakers.

Or there's the fishing game which plays on the console while the player holds a cardboard fishing rod. If a fish is caught in the game the rod vibrates through the console's controllers.

Then there's Robo-Set where the controllers are used to track movements - it's a kind of backpack connected to the hands and feet by cords which works as a movement controller for a robot on the console.

The kit will be available for gamers at the end of April. — dpa
