Lenovo is revamping its versatile Thinkpad X1 family with the introduction of the Thinkpad X1 Carbon and X1 Yoga, unveiled this week at the CES trade fair in Las Vegas.
Among the most curious of the newest features on both models is a small blind called the ThinkShutter that can be used to cover the X1’s built-in webcam.
This feature is likely to attract privacy-conscious users worried about invasive hacks, corporate espionage or state surveillance and offers an easier way to cover a computer's watchful eye than using bits of tape.
A new far-field microphone array allows for voice control of the X1, as well as access to Amazon's voice-activated virtual assistant Alexa. Users can control compatible devices in the home network via voice commands or make purchases through Amazon’s online platform.
Both models in this line, which was often ranked among the best in 2017, come with a 14-inch, 1,920 by 1,080-pixel full-HD displays, and can play both Dolby Vision and High Dynamic Range (HDR) content.
While the X1 Carbon has an especially sturdy carbon fiber housing, the X1 Yoga features Lenovo's 360-degree hinge, allowing it to be used both as a notebook and as a tablet.
Processors will be Intel's eighth-generation Core i chips, while the X1s will have 1 terabyte of SSD memory and up to 16 gigabytes of RAM.
Also new is the Thinkpad X1 Tablet. The 13-inch model with 3K display (3,000 by 2,000 pixels) and pen control can also be used as a laptop with a keypad.
The new top Thinkpad models will be available starting in April. Lenovo has yet to name prices. — dpa
