Windows 10 Mobile, shown here on a Nokia Lumia 950, never really took off. Microsoft has now announced that the operating system will no longer receive functionality or hardware updates.

Windows on the smartphone has no future. From now on, there won't be any new functionality or hardware support for Windows 10 Mobile – just security updates and bug fixes, Microsoft has announced.

Windows 10 Mobile was released at the end of 2015 and is based on the same foundations as Windows 10 for PCs. It was aimed at improving collaboration between computers and smartphones through so-called universal apps, but it never achieved significant market share.
