The Game Awards gears up for show with nominees list

In 2017, Super Mario Odyssey and Zelda: Breath of the Wild have been welcomed as two of the best games of all time.

What were the best games of the year? It's a question asked and answered countless times, and one which The Game Awards will put to its jury and website visitors, with Super Mario Odyssey, Destiny 2, Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Horizon Zero Dawn leading nominations.

Five games stand apart in the nominations list for December 7, 2017's live video game show, The Game Awards.

Streamed online through Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Twitch, the show will also be carried by Valve's PC gaming network Steam, Sony's PlayStation Network, and Microsoft's Xbox Live and Mixer services, among others

Nominated to its 2017 Game of the Year category are the Nintendo Switch's Super Mario Odyssey and Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the PlayStation 4's Horizon Zero Dawn and Persona 5, and PC gaming's PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, which launches on Xbox One the week after The Game Awards take place

Along with Nintendo's acclaimed Mario and Zelda games, open world adventure Horizon Zero Dawn accrued six nominations across all categories, as did one other title not elevated to Game of the Year status: social, sci-fi shooter Destiny 2.

One of its nominations is to the Ongoing category, which acknowledges the long-term appeal of games with an online multiplayer focus, where regular updates keep players engaged.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds was the only other 2017 debutant named for consideration, with Grand Theft Auto Online, Warframe, Rainbow Six: Siege and Overwatch also given nods.

Other multiple nominees not previously mentioned include magical narrative-driven exploration What Remains of Edith Finch, involving action RPG NieR: AutomatA, creepy horror Resident Evil 7,and cinematic adventure Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.

Elsewhere, the Game Awards solve the conundrum of classifying the hybrid Nintendo Switch as a home console, portable device, or both, by limiting the Best Handheld Game category to dedicated devices; in an otherwise platform-agnostic awards ceremony, it effectively becomes a contest between Nintendo 3DS titles.

New for 2017 is Best Chinese Game, an explicit overture to a worldwide audience as The Games Awards expands its reach. Chinese Internet giant Tencent is one of several partners to carry the broadcast internationally.

South Korea's Afreeca TV and Kakao TV, Japan's NicoNico, and OUL Jogos in Brazil were also previously named as broadcast partners.
