Simply deleting stuff from a hard disk or smartphone isn't enough to get rid of it completely – if that's all you do, you will not entirely destroy the data.
In fact, you may only be deleting the index, which is a bit like a table of contents, according to Germany's Federal Office for Security in Information Technology (BSI). In this case, the actual data, such as photos, documents and videos, will be retained.
