Garmin launches sporty Fenix 5 in three sizes

(From left): The Fenix 5S, the Fenix 5X and the Fenix 5 are made to suit a wider variety of wrist sizes.

Garmin's latest smartwatch, the Fenix 5, has skipped a generation number – the previous model was called the Fenix 3.

Of course, the reason is to avoid the Chinese superstition about the number four being unlucky.

With the Fenix 5 series, Garmin has split the line into three distinct sizes instead of just one large size as in the previous generation – you now get a small Fenix 5S in 42mm size, medium Fenix 5 with a 47mm diameter and large Fenix 5X with a 51mm diameter.

All three models have a common set of features, including 24-hour heart rate monitoring, Bluetooth, GPS chipset (for location tracking), barometric altimeter (for altitude and weather monitoring), three-axis digital compass and gyroscope (for measuring movement).

Using the Garmin Connect software, which is available for Android and iOS, you can even receive notifications on the Fenix 5 from your smartphone.

All the Fenix 5 models are also 100m water-resistant and have a QuickFit interchangeable watch band system.

Apart from size, there are a number of differences that set the three models apart.

The Fenix 5 is identical in features to the smaller Fenix 5S except that the Fenix 5 has a more ruggedised finish.

The biggest one, the Fenix 5X, is a more serious watch for the outdoor life and sports enthusiasts – it comes preloaded with a topographic map, cycling maps and advanced navigation features such as Round Trip Run and Round Trip Ride.

Round Trip Run and Round Trip Ride allow you to set a particular distance you want to run or cycle and have the Fenix 5X automatically generate a round trip route based on that.

The maps on the watch can even be set to show you different points of interest along your route, just like a car GPS navigation device.

The Fenix 5 and Fenix 5S are priced the same – RM2,899.

There is also a more expensive version of both, called the Fenix 5 Sapphire and the Fenix 5S Sapphire, which, as the name suggests, comes with scratch resistant sapphire crystal face. They retail for RM3,149 each.

According to local distributor Aeco Technologies (M) Sdn Bhd, both the Fenix 5 and Fenix 5S are available in stores now.

The Fenix 5X will only make an appearance in stores next month for RM3,399 and it comes standard with a sapphire crystal face.
