NEW YORK: US prosecutors are building potential cases that would accuse North Korea of directing the theft of US$81mil (RM358.6mil) from Bangladesh Bank's account at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York last year, and that would charge alleged Chinese middlemen, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The US Federal Bureau of Investigation believes that North Korea is responsible for the heist, an official briefed on the probe told Reuters. Richard Ledgett, deputy director of the US National Security Agency, publicly suggested that North Korea may be linked to the incident, while private firms have long pointed the finger at the reclusive state.
