On March 21, Google published a developers preview of "O", which will apparently have improved battery life and new "notification channels.'

While Google doesn't specify exactly what changes/improvements it has made, the post does emphasise "a big priority on improving a user's battery life and the device's interactive performance" by reducing background app behaviour.
