Guardians of the Galaxy video game revealed early

No pushover: 'Guardians of the Galaxy' became the Marvel Cinematic Universe's fifth biggest hit in terms of global box office.

Marvel and video game developer Telltale Games announced their collaboration in 2015, and until now had managed to keep the nature of their deal under wraps.

A list of work undertaken by members of the SAG-AFTRA actors union has been made public and, in the process, confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy is being turned into a video game.

The comic book property became a blockbuster movie in 2014 when James Gunn directed Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper as the misfit heroes who generated some US$773mil (RM3.3bil) at the international box office.

It was the third-highest grossing film of 2014, behind only The Hobbit trilogy's conclusion, Battle of the Five Armies (US$956mil/RM4.1bil) and Transformers: Age of Extinction (US$1.1bil/RM4.7bil), quite some feat for a franchise debut.

For reference, a US$675mil  (RM2.9bil) Interstellar was the next biggest original property at the movies that year (if we concede that US$758mil (RM3.2bil) Maleficent repurposed fairy tale Sleeping Beauty), and was 2014's 10th biggest hit.

As a result of a strike by SAG-AFTRA members, the union released a list of video games that could be affected by the action, as ComicBookMovie discovered.

Featured among them is a listing for Guardians of the Galaxy – The Video Game, produced by O'Farrell Enterprises – Darragh O'Farrell being one of the producers on several other Telltale titles.

Since updated, the list now identifies the project as Untitled Marvel Game"

With the Marvel-Telltale project already due 2017, it's possible that Guardians of the Galaxy - The Video Game will overlap with sequel movie Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,  due in theatres from May.

Alternatively, it could make use of an animated TV series that has been running since September 2015.

But Telltale has tended not to favor direct adaptations. Instead, its The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, and Batman games have taken themes, environments and characters from the original franchise and put them in new situations.

Batman: The Telltale Series
and The Wolf Among Us (based on Bill Willingham's Fables comic books) retained the original main characters, but many other licenses have not, giving Telltale more creative freedom.—  AFP Relaxnews
