Extremely popular: The Tomb Raider saga has sold more than 46 million copies worldwide, making its star, Lara Croft, one of the most popular icons of the video games world.
The British adventurer is celebrating the franchise's 20th anniversary with a special treat for fans and gamers. A 20-year celebration edition of Rise of the Tomb Raider featuring exclusive new content was released for PS4, Xbox 360 and PC.
Still in search of the Divine Source – an artifact believed to grant immortality – Lara Croft has her work stolen by a paramilitary organisation when visiting a tomb in Syria. The heroine sets out in pursuit, embarking on adventures that take her to the depths of Siberia.
Rise of the Tomb Raider is by no means a new game. Developed by Crystal Dynamics, the opus was released last fall, but only for Microsoft consoles: the Xbox One and Xbox 360. A PC version also landed in January 2016.
Now, the adventure is set to return Oct 11 in an exclusive new version with fresh content. Gamers can enjoy a new story chapter called Blood Ties, a zombie mode called Lara's Nightmare, a co-op Endurance mode and an Extreme Survivor difficulty setting for the solo campaign. The anniversary edition also includes a new outfit and weapon, five classic skins for Lara Croft plus all previously released content.
The game promises over 50 hours of frantically paced exploration and adventure, previewed in the game's trailer. Previously available for Xbox One and PC, Rise of the Tomb Raider will be coming to PS4 for the first time this fall. Although users of Sony's console have been kept waiting a year, their patience has been rewarded with compatibility for PlayStation VR, Sony's virtual reality headset that's up for release two days later.
Since bursting onto the scene Nov 14, 1996, the Tomb Raider saga has sold more than 46 million copies worldwide, making its star, Lara Croft, one of the most popular icons of the video games world. The character has even made it to the big screen. After being played twice by Angelina Jolie in two movies released in 2001 and 2003, Swedish actress Alicia Vikander will be stepping into the role in a new film, announced as a reboot, due out March 2018.
