BREAKING THE DATA BARRIER: Lee (left) with U Mobile chief executive officer Wong Heang Tuck at the launch of Power Prepaid which offers free data for life.

U Mobile is offering 1GB of data for free every month with its Power Prepaid plan.

To qualify users have to purchase the Power Prepaid starter pack at RM8.50 (inclusive of GST) and do a one-time minimum top up of RM10. After that they just have to keep their line active to enjoy the free data offer for life.

Existing U Mobile users who want to convert to the new plan will have to wait till Aug 1.

“Based on our studies, 1GB is the basic allocation that users should have to go online today and we are giving them just that,” says U Mobile chief marketing officer Jasmine Lee.

The company says that there are over 16.5 million active mobile Internet users in Malaysia with 79% of them accessing social media platforms via mobile devices and 90% of them using smartphones for entertainment.

Malaysians also spend an average of three hours and 39 minutes everyday accessing the Internet using mobile smart devices.

The prepaid pack comes with RM5 preloaded airtime and 200MB of data with a 10 days validity period.

Once users run out of data, they will still be able to surf for free but at a slower speed of 64Kbps (kilobits per second) and are subject to the company’s fair usage policy of 2GB maximum per month.

The plan also offers 150 minutes of free calls to any U Mobile number but users are limited to just 15 minutes of calls per day. Voice call is rated at 5sen for every 30 seconds while each SMS costs 8sen.

Lee says U Mobile has more product enhancements and features in the pipeline and will be making more announcements in the coming months.
