THE NEW WAVE OF ART: A new generation of artists use video, sound and the web for their work.

Daata Editions, which launched in New York, is setting out to offer a platform for artists whose works is not easily exhibited in a gallery context.

Gearing the platform toward a new generation of artists whose media are video, sound and the web, founder David Gryn says the idea came out of his work as a curator, when he saw the obstacles involved in getting digital works to galleries, museums, and collectors.

Daata Editions' solution is to commission artists and provide a portal on which collectors and other viewers can easily access the material.

With that in mind, the platform is launching with six commissioned works each by 18 artists all working in video, sound and web formats. Those works -- each in an edition of 20 -- are now available for sale.

The first participating artists are Ilit Azoulay, Helen Benigson, David Blandy, Matt Copson, Ed Fornieles, Leo Gabin, Daniel Keller & Martti Kalliala, Lina Lapelyte, Rachel Maclean, Florian Meisenberg, Takeshi Murata, Hannah Perry, Jon Rafman, Charles Richardson, Amalia Ulman, Stephen Vitiello and Chloe Wise.

A free artwork by Jon Rafman is being offered to all subscribers to mark the launch.

Site visitors can browse the offerings by medium, with prices on the accessible side: the works available now come in at under US$500 (RM1,785).

Daata Editions is not the first such platform built around digital artworks, although its approach to commissioning artwork is original.
