BRICK AND MORTAR: Amazon continues its experiments with physical retail in Holiday 2014.

San Francisco and Sacramento will host pop-up stores for the online merchant this holiday season, promoting Amazon's range that includes e-readers, tablets, and a TV streaming box.

One of the ventures, a "pop-up kiosk" according to Amazon, is set for the upscale Westfield San Francisco Centre shopping mall, with Sacramento's location to be confirmed.

Headquartered in Seattle, Amazon's West Coast plans augment earlier speculation that a branded shop would be opened opposite the Empire State Building in New York.

The retailer already has existing partnerships with traditional chains Best Buy and Walmart (as well as Waterstones in the UK); hosting its own branded retail stores, however temporary, allows Amazon to further control its customers' retail experience, emulating fellow hardware vendors such as Samsung, Sony and Apple. — AFP/Relaxnews 2014
