Looking for an affordable, feature-packed high-end Android smartphone? There are plenty of choices thanks to the influx of Chinese brands and the latest offering comes from Huawei with its flagship model, the Ascend P7.

Many premium high-end smartphones have gone the phablet route but the Ascend P7 remains pretty compact with a 5in full-HD display.

Underneath the surface, the smartphone is powered by a 1.8GHz HiSilicon Kirin 910T quad-core processor, and comes with 2GB RAM. It runs on the latest Android version — 4.4.2 KitKat — and features Huawei’s Emotion 2.3 user interface.

Huawei claims that the smartphone’s 13-megapixel camera can be activated within 1.2 seconds from standby mode by pressing the volume down button. That’s pretty handy, as you don’t have to manually unlock the phone to use the camera.

Selfie fans will like the front-facing camera which has an 8-megapixel sensor, one of the highest in the market.

“The Ascend P7 meets the need for a durable and sophisticated device,” said Huawei Technologies Malaysia consumer business group country director Gary Xu.

Most premium smartphones have a plastic back but Huawei has taken a different route.  — the P7’s sleek glass back was made with a seven-layer surface treatment which increases transparency and gives it a unique “spin effect” finish.

Also, both the front and rear surface are coated with scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

The P7 has a thin profile measuring just 6.55mm thin, making it one of the slimmest 4G LTE smartphones. It also has a dual antenna design, which Huawei claims increases signal reception by 50%.

The P7 retails for RM1,499 and comes in two colours — black or white.

At the launch of the P7, the company also unveiled the Ascend G6 Android smartphone which comes in two flavours — with 3G (RM749) or LTE (RM899) and a wearable band, the TalkBand B1 (RM499).

Also launched at the event were two Android tablets — the X1 7.0 with 3G (RM1,299) or LTE (RM1,399) and MediaPad M1 8.0 with 3G (RM899) or LTE (RM1,099).
