With the release of Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One next gen consoles, it was no surprise that the year has been flooded with videogame announcements.

In 2013 we saw the release of memorable titles such as The Last of Us and Grand Theft Auto 5 which means gamers will be expecting much more next year and from what we have seen and heard so far, they won’t be disappointed.

Without further ado, here are out top five picks for 2014.

5. The Elder Scrolls Online (PC, PS4, Xbox One)

Genre: MMORPG
Release date: April 4

Betheseda’s latest installment in the Elder Scrolls saga will be set a 1,000 years before the events of its last game, the highly successful Skyrim. You and your party of adventurers will have to stop Daedric Prince Molag Bal who is hell bent on absorbing the kingdom of Tamriel into his realm of Coldharbour.
Early gameplay footage was revealed during Gamescom 2013 and showed a massive region that players can unlock and experience at their on pace.

4. Destiny( PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One )
Genre: First-person shooter
Release date: Sept 9

From the creators of Halo comes Destiny which expects to capture multiplayer fans in its immense sci-fi first-person shooter. It’s not an MMO but Bungie has integrated several elements from the genre such as the ability to chat with other gamers in this first-person shooter game.
And gamers can chose to complete the campaign solo or invite friends to join them in their quests.
The unprecedented variety that Destiny will offer guarantees gamers a new universe to live and play in.

3. The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt (PC, PS4, Xbox One)
Genre: Action RPG
Release date: TBA

The popular action role-playing game based on the fantasy novels from Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski will mark the end of the trilogy.
The epic conclusion deserves an equally epic world and The Witcher 3 will be 20% larger than Skyrim. This time Geralt of Rivia will have to travel to the war torn the northern realm kingdom Nillfgard, and he even has to ride a horse or catch a sailboat to travel through some regions.
Featuring the new Red Engine 3, The Witcher 3 will amazingly do away with a loading screen which will allow players to experience the vastly constructed environment seamlessly.

2. Titanfall (PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One )
Genre: First-person shooter
Release date: March 11

Respawn Entertainment revealed the action-packed mech fighting first-person shooter at E3 and it has since swooped over 60 awards. Critics have even labelled the game as the next evolution of first-person shooter games.
The multiplayer game incorporates single-player campaign elements for a fast-paced tempo and players can choose to play as a regular foot soldier or blast enemies with the gigantic Titan Mech.
We can’t wait for the title to land on our shores.

1. Watch Dogs (PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, Wii U)

Genre: Action adventure
Release date: TBA

Gamers were disappointed when the much anticipated new franchise from Ubisoft was delayed from its original release date of November.  But Ubisoft promises that delay will be worth it as it builds a game that’s even more realistic and takes advantage of the next gen consoles.

The game centres on protagonist Aiden Pearce, a highly skilled hacker who’s able to break into just about anything to steal information or even control city traffic.

In this open-world game players can chose to go with guns blazing or be sneaky and use stealth to complete missions. After watching the 14-minute gameplay video we are convinced that it will be one of the top contenders for 2014.
