EPIC Games, developer of the Gears of War franchise and popular Unreal Engine technology, is closing a deal to re-house the recently closed Kingdoms of Amalur studio, Big Huge Games.
Big Huge Games had been under the auspices of ex-baseball star Curt Schilling’s 38 Studios, which shut down during the last week of May amid severe financial trouble.
The very morning that BHG’s senior staff had made contact with Epic, looking to keep their crew afloat, Epic’s directors had been trying to work out how to expand their own company in short order.
“We’d need a dramatic infusion of top talent to do so. Which, we all knew, was impossible,” wrote Epic president Mike Capps on the company website. “So now we’re planning to start an impossible studio in Baltimore.”
Capps also credited Zynga East (whose chief designer Brian Reynolds was a BHG co-founder), Zenimax Online Studios (The Elder Scrolls Online) and “other southeastern studios” for their swift action in taking on ex-BHG staff.
Epic is at work on a new game engine, Unreal Engine 4, designed for high-end PCs and next generation game consoles.
Subsidiary Chair Entertainment has Shadow Complex for Xbox 360 and the Infinity Blade games for iOS under its belt, while People Can Fly made its name with PC shooter Painkiller and console shooter Bulletstorm and has Gears of War: Judgement on the way. — Relaxnews 2012
