China vows faster, cheaper Internet

BEIJING: China aims to bring faster and cheaper Internet access to more of its people, following complaints that a near monopoly by state-backed firms had hurt service.

China has the world’s largest number of Internet users at half a billion, but the government maintains strict controls over content, and recently it launched a crackdown on microblogs after rumours spread of a coup.
